Political Earthquake: Raghav Chadha and 6 Rajya Sabha MPs Desert AAP for BJP

The Great Divide—AAP’s Rajya Sabha Strength Crumbles as Chadha Leads Defection

In a development that has sent shockwaves through the Indian political landscape, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) suffered its most significant blow since its inception. Today, senior leader Raghav Chadha, once considered the "poster boy" of the party’s national ambitions, officially resigned from AAP to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
The defection is not a solitary move; Chadha is leading a group of seven Rajya Sabha MPs—representing 70% of the party’s strength in the Upper House. The defecting cohort includes prominent figures like Sandeep Pathak, Ashok Mittal, Swati Maliwal, and Harbhajan Singh. By crossing the two-thirds threshold, the group effectively bypasses the Anti-Defection Law, allowing them to merge with the BJP without risking their parliamentary seats.
The Breaking Point
Addressing the media, Raghav Chadha described his departure as an "inevitable move for national progress," stating he felt increasingly sidelined within the party. "I found myself as the right man in the wrong party," Chadha remarked, citing internal silencing and a drift from the party's original anti-corruption ideology as his primary reasons for leaving.
The Reaction from AAP
The remaining AAP leadership has reacted with fierce indignation. Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal termed the move a "monumental betrayal" of the mandate given by the people of Punjab. Senior leader Sanjay Singh accused the BJP of executing a "hostile takeover" via "Operation Lotus," alleging that the MPs were pressured or incentivized to jump ship.
What This Means for the Rajya Sabha
With this merger, the BJP significantly bolsters its numbers in the Rajya Sabha, moving closer to an absolute majority. For AAP, the loss of its parliamentary heavyweights—especially strategist Sandeep Pathak—is a crippling blow to its organizational structure ahead of upcoming state elections.

As the dust settles, the focus shifts to Punjab and Delhi, where the political fallout is expected to trigger a series of local-level defections and a heated war of words between the erstwhile allies.
